Internal Green party documents received by The Exchange last week call into question the rationale for awarding Mothin Ali a Special Responsibility Allowance (SRA). Ali is Deputy Leader of the Green party for England and Wales and a Leeds city councillor (Gipton and Harehills).
The party claimed that Ali received the money — £5.9k on top of his regular councillor allowance of £18.9k — due to his role as “Leeds Green Group spokesperson including leading on youth violence initiatives and mentoring new councillors”. The Green party became eligible for these funds after winning more seats at the May local elections.
However, two pieces of evidence seen by The Exchange cast doubt on this version of events.
