About us

Welcome to The Exchange — a new local paper covering Leeds and West Yorkshire, but in a different way.

Every week we send out just a few articles, going in depth on the city’s big stories. We provide a mix of investigations, features and long-reads, plus lots of round-ups and event listings to help you make the most of living here. We have a website, but the best way to experience us is to sign up to our e-mails, where you'll never miss a story.

Two years ago, historic buildings on Kirkgate collapsed. Why has nothing happened since?
‘This whole thing is very strange’

Our model isn't build on ads, but on paying subscribers. Over 500 people backed us to get us to the point of launching, and our paying members get extra articles as well as knowing they’re supporting local journalists trying to make a difference.

We have two staff writers, Brad Deas and Mia Jankowicz, overseen by editor Daniel Timms. You can read more about Brad and Mia’s stories, and why they’ve joined The Exchange, here.

This new launch is an initiative from Mill Media. We launched a local newspaper in Manchester, The Mill, in 2020. It now has over 50,000 readers. We've since gone on to launch in Sheffield, Liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow, and London (in that order) and it was clearly high time to launch one here as well. Our journalism has won awards, and been described by the FT's John Burn-Murdoch as "one of the most interesting and impressive media startups of the last decade".

Now we're live, we'd love to hear from you — if you've got any tips or ideas for us, then just send us an e-mail here.
