The lost story of the football star killed on the Somme

110 years ago today, Evelyn Lintott died a "particularly gallant" death on the battlefields of France. Photo: courtesy of Thomas Barrett

Evelyn Lintott was on cigarette cards and in the newspapers. Why didn't his former clubs mark his death?

At 7.30am, the mist was beginning to rise near the village of Serre in north-east France. But this was no ordinary summer morning. The time had finally come for the big advance.

Evelyn Lintott, one of the first footballers to enlist in the first world war, was in the trenches, preparing to lead his men in the Leeds Pals battalion over the top. When the moment came, he shouted “Now, Leeds!” to his comrades as they attempted to make it towards enemy lines.

Hi, Brad here. I'm one of the Exchange's small but mighty team. I've spend eight years in the thick of regional news at the Telegraph & Argus and I'm joined on this new paper by Mia Jankowicz, an experienced journalist with international pedigree.

We're absolutely determined to cover Leeds, Bradford and West Yorkshire in the way they deserve and the way you, the readers, deserve. We've already been getting fantastic feedback from the just over 2,000 free subscribers we have so far.

Today's fascinating article is for our 500 paying members. That’s not because we’re feeling stingy, it’s because we want to run a business model that is accountable to readers, not advertisers.

Much of local news in this country relies on a model where news sites are flooded with hundreds of stories, often with little relevance to the place that paper is covering, in order to maximise clicks. We won’t do that. We’re asking readers to pay £8.95 a month so we can create a publication that puts quality, not quantity, first.
